White ring removal

Q: How can I remove a large, white moisture ring that recently appeared on my wooden dining room table?

A: There can be a number of factors behind white table ring problems, and not all situations can be fixed without refinishing. But since moisture is involved in your case, I'd recommend waiting a week or two, in case the problem clears up on its own. Sometimes this happens as the damp finish dries out slowly. If this doesn't occur, you need to apply some very mild abrasion to the ring and surrounding area. A crumpled nylon stocking is a good choice. Rub very gently in a circular pattern with good light shining over your shoulder. If all goes well you'll see the ring fade as you work. Don't be afraid to apply a little more pressure if nothing seems to be happening at first. The main danger with this approach is altering the sheen level of the rubbed area. That's why you should also consider rubbing an area larger than the ring, feathering any transition zone so the repair becomes invisible.
