Innovative Building Systems

Q: Where can I find a builder willing to use some of the leading-edge construction technology I see? I've been researching insulated concrete forms (ICFs) and other building innovations for a house, but all the builders I find are only interested in doing standard stud frame construction.

A: ICFs are one of a handful of innovative building systems that are making homes more energy efficient and easier to construct. Structural insulated panels (SIPs) and radiant in-floor heating are two other options that I know and have experience with. But as you’re discovering, new approaches like these enter the building scene slowly. It takes a while for most contractors to adopt new ways. Your best bet is to start with companies that manufacture the new systems. They'll be able to direct you to advanced builders who have honed their skills with the new approaches. I have bought materials from three innovative building suppliers over the last few years, including Thermapan SIPs (www.thermapan.com; 877-443-9255), Formtech ICFs (www.formtechsys.com; 877-848-6155) and Warmrite radiant in-floor heating hardware (www.warmrite.com; 800-268-4664).
