Finishing a wood threshold
Q: What can I do about the birch threshold between my kitchen and family room? Even though it was varnished 2 1/2 years ago, it looks worn now. Can you suggest a more durable finish that will stand up better than the original varnish?
A: Floor surfaces take a lot of abrasion, especially in areas that rise above the general floor area, like your threshold. I'm not surprised that it looks rough after a couple of years. I don't know of any varnish-type product that would have stood up much better, but I can offer a completely different approach. Finishing oil, especially tung oil products made especially for floors, can be easily maintained, giving them an edge over varnish. Although not as tough as varnish, oils can be reapplied every few months, creating a nearly new appearance all the time. Daub some on at night, let it soak in for a few minutes, then wipe off the excess before you go to bed. Depending on the product you choose, it may even be ready to walk on in the morning.
