Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

How secure are lock boxes?

Question: We have just listed our home on multiple listing and our realtor wants to hang a lock box on our door so other realtors can access our home when we are not there. Are these lock boxes safe?

Fourchalk: Lock boxes, for the most part, are not secure. Before giving your realtor a key to your home, phone your local locksmith and have them install a high security cylinder in your front door. These cylinders can sometimes be installed in your existing locks, making them very affordable. Once the cylinder is installed you will be given high-security keys. These keys will give you total key control, eliminating the chance of a duplication. This is the key you will give to your realtor. Make sure they sign for it!
