Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

Important to secure pool and spa areas around home

Pool alarms are not exactly a household name. In fact most people have never heard of a pool alarm whether they own a pool or not. This unique alarm is a passive infrared motion detector very similar to what most homes have as a part of their security system.

This self-contained, outdoor mini alarm system has all the features of an in-home security system packed into one sturdy unit approximately 8" x 4" x 4".The pool alarm detects both body heat and motion creating a barrier that is virtually impenetrable. A dual role is created by protecting children or pets from drowning as well as detecting intruders that enter your back yard pool or spa area.

These battery-powered devices offer a radius of 8.5 yards and a sector of 150 degrees. Don't worry about low batteries because a chirping sound signals as soon as the unit needs battery replacement, giving you lots of warning.

When somebody walks within the radius of the pool alarm, a 110-decibel micro siren will sound, making it possible to hear the alarm from 50 yards away. This creates a safe environment for storing pool equipment, as well as patio furniture.

To set the alarm, you simply turn the key. If a false alarm is triggered, the siren will sound for 45 seconds and then re-arm itself, assuring the protected area is guarded at all times.

Make sure that you install a five- or six-foot fence around your pool or spa area, making sure to design and construct it in such a way that it is difficult to climb over. Gaps should be no less than four inches to assure that small children do not enter your pool area. A gapped fence will also give good visibility to those hidden areas that would-be burglars enjoy hiding in.

Gates should be self-closing and self-latching to assure that they are not left open. You can install a good deadbolt latch on gated areas and have them keyed to your house key for convenience.

Many homes are installing video cameras to help monitor areas around pools and spas that present a liability risk.

Lighting is a must, not only for good home security, but for good home safety.

Make sure all doors and windows are locked before retiring to your back yard. If you own a house alarm make sure that you arm it. It only takes an intruder a few minutes to make off with your most valued possessions while you're enjoying a soak in the hot tub or a splash in the pool.
