Shedding some light on shadow thieves

A shadow thief is a force to reckon with. These non-violent risk takers lurk around corners often appearing from nowhere ready to snatch your purse, wallet, laptop, luggage or even your car. A hit that can leave you feeling shocked, frustrated, infuriated and even discouraged with mankind.

The next time you turn your back or leave your possessions unattended, they might just happen to be claimed by one of these slimy fast-moving predators. These losers have premeditated skills that have been developed into a magical science, giving them the ability to make objects disappear into thin air.

We can however take the fun out of their magical act by educating ourselves and becoming informed on how they execute their craft. Being aware and realizing that we could be a victim of a sneak thief is half the battle. That old adage, "It will never happen to me" has to somehow find itself on another page.

Because they tend to blend in with the surroundings, shadow thieves have no boundaries. You could be a victim at an airport terminal, the mall, ATM machine or even in the privacy of your own home.

Try not to look distracted. People with children are a great mark because they are so easily distracted. In this day and age children are our greatest concern and unfortunately thieves are capitalizing on the opportunity to fleece concerned parents. Whether at the mall, on the beach or at the park, try to be aware of where you placed your possessions.

ATM machines are a great hangout for the shadow thief. The next time you use an ATM machine make sure that you are not shadowed by a thief wanting to steal your card and PIN number. Always check the card slot by running your finger along it checking for anything out of the ordinary. If you suspect that the slot has been tampered with, get a positive ID on the person standing behind you and inform local police authorities.

The next time you enter a bus or subway make sure that you exit with the same items you embarked with. Shadow thieves like to scope out potential victims with carry-ons. Whether it's a camera bag, purse or cluster of shopping bags, this light-fingered expert quite often cozies up for the score. Once firmly planted next to his or her victim, they almost always exit with more than they boarded with.

Don't think because you are in the safety of your home that you are exempt from this type of thief. These thieves quite often have an agenda that must be fulfilled. Often your vehicle is scripted into their items of business. Make sure that you always lock your doors and windows. If you must have ventilation, install proper window locks to prevent the sneaky hands of a shadow thief from entering your home and making off with your possessions that could include your car keys and your car.
