Better Bookshelves
Q: Does anyone make furniture with substantial back panels? My husband and I are looking for shelves to house a large collection of books, but everything we see has thin, flimsy backs. We want these bookcases to last a long time, but everything seems destined to fail. Any suggestions?
A: The back panels on manufactured furniture are often disappointing, and the reason is simple economics. Profit margins on mass-produced furniture are very slim, so designs gravitate towards the lowest common denominator, especially in hidden areas like backs. That said, a 1/4-inch thick back panel of the type you've probably been seeing could be beefed up substantially by diligent installation. Instead of just the finishing nails or staples used at the factory, use glue and small screws to boost the strength of the back. Also, make sure the back panel is fastened to the rear edges of the shelves, and not just around the outside of the case. With reasonable care and enhanced assembly, I think ready-made bookcases can last along time.
