Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

Preventing computer theft

Question: We had a robbery at our business and had several computers stolen. We have ordered new ones and would like to know the best way to lock them down. Our neighbour recommended cable locks.

Fourchalk: First of all, I hope you have an alarm system! All computer lock-down systems offer a greater degree of security and protection when enhanced with an alarm system.

Cable locks are probably the most popular and best-known method of computer-hardware security. In this system, locking hasps are glued to the computer and hardware, and a thin flexible cable is threaded thorough the hasps then looped around a stationary object, such as a desk or table leg. Unfortunately, this system offers lightweight security, and is really not suitable for long-term protection.

I would recommend a pre-installed locking system. This system offers a very substantial solution that protects your computer from theft of the entire computer as well as tampering or removal of internal components. These locking systems are generally user friendly for routine use as well as servicing. The lock is easily removed and there are no plates or adjustments to get in the way.

I would suggest you phone your computer dealer and have this type of system pre-fabricated in your new computers.
