Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

Long range radio transmitters affordable security

Question: We have an alarm system that was in the house when we purchased it. We are paying monthly monitoring fees. What happens if the phone lines are cut? Will the monitoring station be notified?

Fourchalk: Unless you have cellular backup, your monitoring station will not be notified if the phone lines are cut. Cellular backup can be quite expensive and usually comes with a monthly monitoring fee.

Cellular technology will transmit each signal received over the cellular airwaves to a central monitoring station.

Another great but expensive way around a cut phone line is to install a dedicated phone line into your home. This uses your local telephone company's technology and will transmit a break in the telephone line to the monitoring station.

Several alarm companies are also installing long-range radio transmitters to act as a back-up to the alarm panel. If a break-in occurs the radio transmitter will send a wireless transmission to a receiver at the central monitoring station. This is definitely a more affordable solution.
