Protecting our nation's flag from thieves
Question: We are proud of our country and enjoy watching our flag ripple at the top of our flag pole on a windy day. However, we have had three flags stolen by thieves. I put a little padlock at the base of the pole preventing anybody from removing the flag. However vandals broke the lock and stole the flag one night. It is costing me a fortune in flags, can you recommend a way of securing our nation's flag so that we can continue to enjoy it?
Fourchalk: I had a similar problem to deal with a few years ago when I was called to a senior's home who had several flags stolen by youngsters.
It always amazes me to hear about this type of crime, because it's hard to believe that people, whether young or old, have nothing better to do with their time. However, in saying that, here is the remedy that I recommended and executed for my customer.
Move the tie supports for the flag up the pole about ten feet. Once you have done that, grease the pole from the ground to the ten foot line. This should guarantee that your flag will fly for many years.
