Do closed drapes increase security?
Question: I very often go for walks in our neighborhood after dark and notice that quite a few homes (my next-door neighbor included) leave their drapes open and lights on. When I mentioned to my neighbor that I felt it was a security risk leaving her drapes open, she got very annoyed and insinuated I was a peeping tom.
She also told me that she is safer leaving all the drapes open, because a burglar would see somebody is home and forfeit a break-in. To me, broadcasting your every move to a potential burglar is not a smart idea. Could you please help clear up this controversial issue?
Fourchalk: I agree with you! Living in a fish bowl is not a safe move and displays to a window-shopping burglar not only who is in the home but what is in the home. That stereo system or big screen television can send out a strong message to a thief.
Leaving blinds or drapes open at night not only gives a burglar a complete home inventory but also displays living habits that can help them execute their crime. As far as your neighbor's theory, a burglar would forfeit the break-in if they knew somebody was home. That may be true, however your neighbor can be assured the information was recorded and the crime postponed to a later date. So, show this article to your neighbor and tell her to close her blinds and stay safe.
