Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

"Illusion security" effective and simple intruder deterrent

Question: I have lived in my secured home for 35 years and never once felt nervous. However, I just recently became a widow and find living alone can be frightening at times.

My neighbour said that he would park his car in my driveway to give the illusion that his car belongs with my home. Are there any other things I could do to give the illusion that I don't live alone?

Fouchalk: "Illusion security" is certainly one of the most effective and simple intruder deterrents. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most overlooked, possibly because of its simplicity.

Other ways to make your home appear as if there are a number of people or pets around are to leave a few toys in the yard, leave a large pair of men's boots outside the door, put a dog dish or leash outside, and hang a "Beware of Dog" sign.

Joining or forming your neighbourhood's Block Watch will also make you feel more secure in your neighbourhood and home.
