Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

Hard-wired security system offers higher safety level

Question: We are considering purchasing a home security system. I would like an alarm system installed by a professional alarm company, however, my husband wants to buy a do-it-yourself system. He says it's cheaper and works just as well.

What is the difference between these two systems and which do you feel is the better system?

Fourchalk: Your husband is right about one thing - it would be cheaper to install a do-it-yourself alarm system. However, I'm not totally sure that it would be the best decision unless budget is the deciding factor.

Most do-it-yourself systems sold off the shelf in stores are battery-operated wireless systems. These security systems usually consist of a control box and several perimeter sensors that attach to doors and windows. Once a break-in occurs, the sensor's transmitter sends a signal to the control box which triggers the alarm inside the box.

Most professionally installed alarm systems connect remote perimeter sensors by wire to a central controller. This is refereed to as a "hard-wired" system.

A hard-wired security system can provide a higher level of security if it has been installed by a reputable alarm installer who uses high-quality components when installing.
