Taller-than-usual toilet

Q: Where can I buy a taller-than-usual toilet? My wife and I are both seniors and find that our knees don't bend as well as they used to.

A: You don't actually need a new toilet. Retail outlets that carry products for assisted living offer a couple of different kinds of items to help you. One is a raised platform that a regular toilet sits on. You'd need a plumber to remove your existing toilet, fasten the extension to the floor, then reinstall the toilet on top. An easier and less expensive option (and one you should definitely try first) is a seat extension. It fits over the top of the toilet you have now, raising the height of the regular toilet bowl opening.
