Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

Sliding patio door security

Question: I have a sliding patio-door handle that locks from the inside. Is it possible to install a lock with a key that we can operate from the outside?

Fourchalk: Yes, it is possible. A locksmith would simply drill through the outside of the sliding door and install a cylinder (the part that accepts the key). The cylinder simply provides a means for the user to operate the locking mechanism from the outside.

In apartments you see this type of application on individual suites where the only outside access is through a sliding door. In houses this type of lock is often installed in secondary suites where, again, the sliding door is the only means to the outside.

That said, locking mechanisms on sliding patio door handles are extremely inadequate and I caution you against converting this type of lock to key access. Installing a good secondary lock on the inside of the door is the best way to secure a sliding patio door. Don't jeopardize security for convenience!
