Solving Hot Water Woes

Q: Could you tell me how to change the element on an electric hot water tank? We’ve been running short hot water lately and I need to get the problem fixed!

A: Running out of hot water could be caused by a faulty heating element in your tank, but not necessarily. There could also be a problem with the wiring or the thermostat. If either of these is malfunctioning and keeps the tank temperature too low, then you'll find yourself taking short showers, too. Most full-size electric water heaters have two elements in the storage tank, one at the top and one at the bottom. And if one of these goes bad, that will show up in the form of less hot water. That said, changing a water heater element is not basic do-it-yourself stuff. The job involves working with wiring, water and element fittings that are probably at least a little corroded. That's why I think you should call in a pro. Self-reliance as a homeowner is a great thing, but there are areas where it's not prudent to jump right in.
