Polish brass hardware

Q: How can I restore the good looks of the brass handles and locks on my exterior doors? The lacquer coating has worn off in places, and where the lacquer remains it’s now quite dark. When I polish the metal only bare areas come clean. What can I do?

A: Many brass items are factory-coated with lacquer like yours and the problem you describe is almost universal. The lacquer is designed to protect brass in the showroom, but it doesn't help much in the real world. To remove the blotchy appearance, start by rubbing the door handles with lacquer thinner or acetone. Some brands of nail polish remover work, too. When all the film is gone, polish the metal and leave it at that. You could spray more lacquer to extend the time of shine, but it's more trouble than it's worth. Regular use and an occasional polishing create a great patina that just gets better over time.
