Hardwired versus wireless burglar alarms
Question: I am thoroughly confused on whether to choose a hardwired burglar alarm or a wireless system. Could you help explain some of the differences between the two systems?
Fourchalk: Hardwire alarm systems rely on simple switching circuits to operate. They are very easy to understand and do not need complex electronics. They quite simply run from one main power supply excluding the need for batteries. This type of alarm system does not use radio signals. This means that their arm and disarm codes cannot be cloned or grabbed by technological criminals. Care must be taken in installing a hardwired system. The wiring must be buried, hidden or encased as to discourage burglars from tampering with the system.
Wireless alarm systems do not have cables connecting sensors to the main control panel. This makes for an easy fit without the need for alterations. Garages or sheds can be included in the system without the need for external cables or wires. Most wireless alarms are controlled by keyfob control. This eliminates the need to remember security codes.
If you select a wireless system, keep in mind that you will have to monitor each sensor, as it has its own battery. Most wireless systems let you know when the battery is getting low. It is possible with specialized receiver/decoder equipment for undesirables to grab or clone a security code as well as jam a panel to destroy sensor alarm signals. Although this is a possibility, it is highly unlikely.
