Frank Fourchalk - Home Security

Vandal-proofing your backyard

Question: We are having problems with vandals walking up our back lane in the evening and vandalizing our back fence. How can we make this area more secure?

Fourchalk: Make sure that you trim any trees that may obstruct the view of your back fence. You and your neighbours must be able to get a clear view of the problem area to make a difference.

Install lots of motion lighting to illuminate the area. The lighting must be installed high enough to prevent tampering and should be covered with a wire cage to prevent smashing.

Lighting alone could solve your problem; however, forming a Block Watch with your neighbors and police will open the lines of communication in your neighborhood. Communication is vital when dealing with neighborhood security issues.
