Daniel creates beautiful swirly, laminated all wood coffee tables
in his Marianne series from which he sent us one entitled Marianne
II. His inspiration for the table and perhaps all his work is taken
from the female form especially the small of the back and a bit
of the hip. He says that many people see horses or musical instruments
in the tables, which is not surprising because guitars, violins
and other instruments also reflect the female form.
The
way Marianne II resolves, circling off into vortex, is a child friendly
idea and not a pointy danger. Daniel uses patterns and templates
with a jigsaw to cut and routers to shape the edges. In Marianne
II, because it circles in on itself, some of it is not accessible
to power tools so parts are hand carved. Legs are turned on a lathe,
which is not too complicated although Daniel finds matching legs
to a table a difficult proposition.
