Claudia is multi-talented - she paints, is a gourmet chef and is also a woodworker.

When Claudia moved to her home near Burlington, Ontario she eventually got around to refurbishing a huge old barn built in 1860. She salvaged all the old wood that was worth keeping, as well as countless other old found objects such as doors, windows, cupboards, tin etc., and now creates objects from them. Claudia loves the idea that pieces of wood from a barn that served as a structure for livestock, for storing apples and other countless needs over the years, could be reconstructed into a lamp, a small box or an umbrella stand.

The umbrella stand shows Claudia's love for the authentic, weathered state of the wood she works with.

The top trim is the batten; the sides are barn board, made with compound angles at the corners. With an almost-dry brush she lightly painted it with white latex paint to highlight the character of the wood.

Claudia sells these as umbrella stands or as vases. Dried flowers can go in directly. For fresh cut flowers, she adds a glass cylinder to protect the inside and hold water for the flowers.
