Sharon started drawing at about the age of five. Her first masterpiece
was a very large bunny, drawn on a freshly painted wall and done in
purple crayon. A few years later she progressed to oil paintings and
at 13 was introduced to a woman who was from the Pennsylvania Dutch
tradition. She refused to teach Sharon how to paint the roses, ribbons,
and birds that dotted all the furniture in her house because she felt
that the Pennsylvania Dutch painting style was only attractive to
the Amish. However, Sharon was hooked. Now her husband Martin designs
and makes all the furniture that she paints. She believes that decorative
painting is an important part of family memories and keepsakes.
Sharon
teaches her style of painting, sells her patterns, and has written
a book entitled Settlers Cabin Presents Cabin Fever.
Sharon
and Martin's umbrella stand is made of oak and pine. Sharon went
to Japan in 1997 to teach art and painted this to bring with her.
She has an enduring love of her Canadian heritage.
